After a long day, we know that sinking into a luxurious bath can melt away the stresses of the day, but did you know that it has been scientifically proven to improve your health in several ways?

Scientifically proven reasons to take a bath

Warm baths increase the body’s core temperature, and this is thought to help regulate the circadian rhythm.  Researchers found that the ideal time to take a bath is 90 minutes prior to bedtime as this decreases the time it takes to fall asleep by 10 minutes.  A small study in Germany studied the effect of soaking in a warm bath twice a week versus exercise for the same amount of time in those found to be clinically depressed and found that those who bathed reported a greater reduction of depressed symptoms than those who exercised.  Imagine the compounding mood-lifting benefits of bathing after a workout.

Now that we have established the benefits of taking a bath, I would like to share some tips on how to take the perfect bath while optimizing it for your skin health.

Not Too Hot

Normal body temperature is 37C and the ideal temperature for a bath is between 40 and 45 C. The water should feel warm, but not uncomfortably hot.  The stratum corneum, or the outermost layer of the skin, forms a barrier which protects the deeper layers of the skin, preventing the entry of bacteria and toxins, while maintaining moisture.   At temperatures higher than 45C, this layer breaks down, which can lead to dryness and inflammation of the skin.

Short but Sweet

Baths should last no longer than 15 minutes.   Any longer and the skin is stripped of its natural oils, which can lead to irritation and inflammation.

Soothe the Senses

Baths are also a great opportunity to soothe your skin based on what is ailing it.  To soothe dry, irritated skin, soak in an oat bath.  This is great for inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis or eczema. Affirm is a brightening, soothing, and collagen-supporting luxurious oil blend that can be used on the entire body. This luxurious body oil blend boasts antioxidants and hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties to minimize trans-epidermal loss.  Housed in a hand-blown glass vessel, it is the ultimate indulgence. If you prefer the feeling of bath oils, such as Sweet Almond Oil, apply them before stepping into the tub, sprinkle a small amount into the water, or apply it after the bath.  This seals in the skin’s moisture and keeps it nice and supple.  Add a few drops of calming essential oils like lavender, geranium or rose to your bath oil to further ease the mind and body.  Light a few candles and relaxation is inevitable.

Beyond the Bath

When drying off after bathing, make sure to gently pat dry.  It is recommended to leave some dampness on the skin and moisturize immediately with your favorite firming moisturizer such as Revision’s BodiFirm or Environ’s nourishing Body Oil Forte.  This process seals in the moisture from the bath.   Whether you are enjoying a bath or a shower, immediate moisturizing should be  incorporated into your daily routine to enjoy soft, supple skin all over the body.
